Software programs are evolving. You no longer have to buy it off the shelf. You can purchase it online. Have access to all your financial information at your fingertips no matter where you are in the world.
But which one is better? Desktop or Online? Let’s explore the differences between the two and see who comes out on top.
Pricing
Desktop software is a one-time purchase. You can go into a store and buy it off the shelf. It may have a pretty steep price tag for a small business owner. But once you pay the price it’s done and over with.
Online programs are fee structured. Most online providers offer their accounting systems at a low monthly fee. This makes it a very affordable purchase. However, one you have used the program for more than 12 months you have pretty much paid the same price as yo would if you bought it off the shelf.
Winner: Although you have to pay a larger fee up front, once you pay it, it’s over with. So desktop wins.
Access
With desktop software, it is installed onto your local computer. Most programs have licensing restrictions that prevent you from installing it on multiple computers; however some will allow you to install the program on up to three so that multiple users can access the file simultaneously. You will only be able to access the file if you are at your office. Installing it on a laptop, however does make it more easier to access. There is also the option of using online web services that allow you to log in remotely, as long as you keep your computer on.
Online programs allow you to access your file from anywhere. That’s the biggest selling point of using an online system. From the office or from your home; in the car or on a train; on a computer or from you phone – doesn’t matter. Update your file anywhere and anytime.
Winner: To be able to access your files from anywhere and anytime provides convenience and flexibility so online wins.
Updates and Support
Desktops require a purchase of a support plan in the event of system errors. And you have to constantly download updates to ensure you program is operating effectively.
Online programs typically provide support for free with a subscription and updates are loaded automatically.
Winner: Online wins here because nothing is better than free.
So which one is better desktop or online?
My personal opinion is online but the truth of the matter is it depends on your needs. What features will allow your business to run more efficiently and effectively?
Which option do you use – desktop or online? ? What made you choice that option? What benefits do you think are important that I haven’t mentioned? We would love to hear from you.
